It's with good reason that To Kill a Mocking Bird is on school syllabuses around the world. A rare gem of a novel which tackles the most difficult of subjects with inspirational humanity throughout. It follows three years in the life of Scout Finch and her brother Jem in their fictional Alabama town during the Great Depression. Scout deals with the trials of growing up alongside the drama surrounding her lawyer father Atticus who is representing a black man accused of raping a white woman.  Atticus Finch is a man and hero like no other. As Homer Simpson summed it up: "It gave me absolutely no insight on how to kill mockingbirds! Sure it taught me not to judge a man by the colour of his skin…" 'Nuff said.
